Top Locations for Fibromyalgia Relief

FMOnline vol. 8, no. 10

Cold and wet weather is among the top complaints of people with FM. Rheumatology specialists at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center suggest that people with arthritis move to warm and dry climates. Many people with FM have also experienced symptom relief in these environments. With that in mind, here are a few U.S. relocation destinations to consider for fibromyalgia relief.

Arizona

Arizona is the most popular destination for people with FM due to its dry and hot climate. Little rain and yearlong warm temperatures make it an ideal year-round destination. This might be the place for you if humidity exacerbates your symptoms. But if you are heat-intolerant, watch out for the killer summers!

California
Places such as San Diego County offer temperate climates and very little rain all year round. Don’t forget to pack your bathing suit, as the main draw for living in California is the beautiful beaches. Who wouldn’t find it relaxing to fall asleep listening to ocean waves lapping on the sandy shore?

New Mexico
Often overlooked, New Mexico is very similar to Arizona in temperature and humidity, with slightly colder winters and slightly cooler summers. If you don’t find the big-city life of Phoenix appealing, you might feel more comfortable in the smaller city of Albuquerque.

Texas
Texas is a big state with a variety of climates. From the more humid climate of Dallas to dryer and milder San Antonio, people with FM have a spectrum of locations to choose from. El Paso is a great choice weather-wise, with very mild temperatures all year long and practically no humidity. Texas cities also get a high mark for lower cases of depression—and may be a particularly good choice if you suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Hawaii
For air pressure-related issues, such as achy pain that accompanies storms, just say aloha! Because fewer storms come near Hawaii, it can be an ideal place for people with FM. Additionally, it might help ease migraines and arthritic joint pain. Of course, you have to weigh the cost of living against the cost of pain relief.
