Economic Crisis Continues to Impact NFA and Other Nonprofits

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Sept. 24, 2009) —The current economic conditions continue to challenge businesses and organizations nationwide, particularly those in the nonprofit sector.

According to new survey data from the National Council of Nonprofits:

  • Contributions and grants, from all sources—individuals, foundations, corporations and government—have all dramatically decreased over the past year.
  • Foundation assets have shrunk by an average of 26 percent.
  • Corporate giving programs are giving less; many are not giving at all.
  • Individuals are giving fewer dollars and fewer gifts. Giving USA, published by the Giving USA Foundation, reported that overall giving was down by 5.7 percent in 2008.

The survey also noted that the demands on charitable nonprofits are dramatically increasing and operating costs continue to rise.

Like all nonprofits, the National Fibromyalgia Association has been impacted by these economic conditions. In an effort to try to balance our good works with today’s financial reality, effective Sept. 25, 2009, the NFA will go to a four-day workweek. This change, which results in a 20 percent pay reduction for all staff, will allow us to reduce our monthly operating expenses. The office will remain open Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (PST).

“Funding is always a challenge for nonprofits; but this year has been especially difficult because of the long-lasting economic downturn,” says NFA President and Founder Lynne Matallana. “The NFA is committed to helping the fibromyalgia community. This cost-saving measure will help us to better weather and withstand the current economic conditions.”
