FM and Normal Daily Activities
Date: October 6, 2009 Expert: Rae Marie Gleason Executive Director, National Fibromyalgia Association
Q: Are there other people with fibromyalgia who are unable to perform “normal” daily activities and work duties? If I don’t take my pain medications, I can barely walk, move or drive.
A: Unfortunately, the answer to your question is yes. For those with severe symptoms, fibromyalgia can be extremely debilitating and interfere with basic daily activities. A work and disability status of 1,668 FM patients, for example, reported that 25% had received disability payments. (Wolf, J Musculoskeletal Pain. 1993)
However, clinical studies have also demonstrated that fibromyalgia patients can reduce their symptoms through a variety of treatment options. One of the most important factors in improving the symptoms of FM is for the patient to recognize the need for lifestyle adaptation. Working in conjunction with knowledgeable healthcare professionals, motivated and informed patients can experience significant improvement in their symptoms and quality of life.
