Facebook Fans on the Rise
In August 2009, the National Fibromyalgia Association launched its first social media campaign, with a goal of getting 10,000 Facebook fans by Oct. 1. Called “10,000 for 10 Million,” the campaign referred to the 10 million people in the United States who have fibromyalgia.
That goal was reached well in advance of its deadline—and now, less than six months later, the number of fans has more than tripled, reaching more than 30,300.
“We are truly overwhelmed and overjoyed by everyone’s show of support,” said Lynne Matallana, president of the National Fibromyalgia Association. “It’s very rewarding to read that the NFA’s Fans page is the first place posters have found-- both online and offline--where they can find support and understanding of their illness.
“With these significant numbers, acquired in such a short time, we will be able to tell our story to the media, to the medical community and to everyone else, letting them know that fibromyalgia is real, and that we need more research and better treatment options for the 10 million people suffering with this illness.”
