Get Moving
Most people with fibromyalgia know that scores of studies have shown exercise to be beneficial in managing FM symptoms--but many people with fibromyalgia are reluctant to undertake exercise regimens that, they fear, will exacerbate the very symptoms that are supposed to be eased.
Now a new study in Arthritis Research & Therapy claims that activity other than traditional exercise can provide similar benefits for FM patients. Undertaking lifestyle physical activities—including walking, using the stairs, and even gardening—in short bursts throughout the day may be as beneficial as exercising for 30 consecutive minutes, researchers say.
What’s the best path to take? The one you’ll stay on, researchers say. If you prefer taking a water aerobics class to puttering in the garden, by all means, continue with the class.
