NFA QuestionsCategory: FibromyalgiaMagnesium Supplement
Elaine Kneble asked 3 years ago

I’ve read that taking magnesium malate supplements can help with fibromyalgia pain.  Would you suggest to add this to my diet?  I am a 61 year old woman who was diagnosed at age 40.

Unfortunately the NFA is a non-profit organization and can not give out medical advice on medications. If any one in the community has used magnesium for FM symptoms they are welcome to discribe their experience with this supplement.

I take 500 mg magnesium/day, and it does seem to help with the muscle spasms and soreness.

I take 250 mg of magnesium citrate and found it helps me with pain, especially leg pain and muscle spasms.

My neurologist recommended Magnesium oxide to me specifically for my chronic migraines. I had them since I was 13 years old. Within 1 month the migraines were reduced intensity as well as frequency. I take it before bed and in am. I have only had 1-2 migraines in 4 years. The magnesium also helps with my general well being. I was also recommended to use magnesium cream to rub on joints and other painful areas and it has reduced inflammation which is a contributing factor for pain.
